In total, 21 universities fall under the state responsibility of the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony. The ministry is also responsible for numerous non-university research institutions and associations as well as supra-regional cultural funding and the preservation of historical monuments.
The Volkswagen Foundation is Germany’s largest private, non-profit organization engaged in the promotion and support of academic research. The Foundation’s funding programs address projects in the humanities and social sciences as well as science and technology in higher education and research – both in Germany and abroad. The Foundation’s administrative office is located in Hanover.
